HI CLARA! WHAT RAD THING DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

Growing up facing a lot of adversity, I used marketing as a tool to not only pay for my college but take care of my mom and siblings as well. Since I was 16 years old, I was a self-taught web developer and coder. I founded a drop-shipping boutique that funded my academic career at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. There I enrolled into various business and computer science classes for my degree. While in college, I continued to develop my skills in advertisement, analytics, and social media.
I recently sold my boutique and launched a domestic abuse Non-Profit called Peace Over Pieces which conducts interviews and podcasts with victims while gathering donations all over the world. I recently moved from a corporate marketing agency to creating my own called Ground Plan Studio (www.gpsmarketing.info). My dream was to create a small agency filled with people who do the highest quality work and builds strong relationships with our clients.
Marketing is not just a career to me, it’s an area I genuinely enjoy and constantly try to improve.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW/WHERE YOU GREW UP

I grew up in Columbia, Missouri. My mom is from Thailand, my Dad is from Germany but he's French. I'm half Thai half French. I played sports my whole life, and was a bit of a tomboy. I played tennis and soccer growing up, tennis took up a lot of my passion and time. I played at Westminster College and majored in Marketing and Computer Science. I always had a passion for business, especially marketing as I got older. It was something I felt came naturally, and I always craved to learn more everyday / sharpen my skills in design, running ads, branding, etc.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY

I faced a lot of adversity as I mentioned, growing up in an abusive household. I was also poor. I remember at the earliest ages of 13 I was trying to innovate everyday how to make a couple bucks. By the time I was 16 I coded and developed Soak Boutique, which was an e-commerce store. I grew it quickly and made some quick cash to support myself through college. I figured out it was marketing I was passionate for, and then went on to develop my non-profit and national marketing agency.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SOMEONE WHO WOULD WANT TO BE IN YOUR CAREER/FIELD?

Someone who is independent and headstrong would be great in this field. A business owner is not for the feint-hearted. I am self-taught through connections, courses, online videos and articles... practice practice practice.

WHAT US THE FUTURE FOR YOU? HOW WILL YOU CONTINUE TO GROW?

I plan on growing my agency for the rest of my life until I can sell it and retire at an early age. (although I don't see myself enjoy being retired :)) I currently have 6 employees and 50+ clients within 1 year.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A LOCAL SPOT YOU LOVE THAT OTHERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

The Golden Scoop in Kansas City. The Combine and Ruby Jean's Juicery on Troost. These are great local businesses that are my favorites! They support defeating stigmas in minorities.
